At least 11 of the meteorological balloons, carrying 18,000 packages of black-market cigarettes, have been collected so far

Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.

Aviation Problems

The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.

Law Enforcement Actions

Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.

Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.

Contraband Recovery

A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.

International Illegal Trade

While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."

Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.

Neighboring Country Impact

Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.

Illegal Transport Methods

Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."

Security Service Goals

Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."

International Concerns

These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.

Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
