Users Stopping Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People buying such treatments should be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to original weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like something activating and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle support.
