TikTok Grants Viewers Control to Limit AI-Generated Content in Personal Streams

The platform is rolling out a new feature that allows them to reduce the volume of AI-created media appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the service disclosed that it now features more than 1 thousand million AI-generated clips.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is being tested over the following weeks before a full-scale launch. This shift coincides with a surge in AI content, fueled by emerging video-generation tools.

AI Content on Other Platforms

It has been noted that approximately a tenth of the fastest-growing video streams on a popular video site only show AI-generated videos. A considerable share of this content is deemed “AI slop”, a phrase for substandard, mass-produced content that is often absurd or bizarre.

“We know from our community that many people enjoy content created using AI tools, ranging from AI artwork to informative clips, and we want to offer the community the power to increase or decrease of that, depending on their own preferences,” commented a spokesperson.

Volume and Proportions

The platform shared that there are presently 1.3bn videos on its service labeled as artificially created. Overall, over 100 mn media items are added to the service daily, making AI content a limited percentage of its complete catalog.

User Control Features

Members will be capable of limit or boost the level of AI content they watch by accessing the “manage topic” option in the platform and picking “AI-generated content”. Additional categories that currently be controlled under the tool encompass current affairs, clothing, beauty, and movement.

Content Labeling and Policies

Its policies mandate content makers to tag convincing AI-generated content, and it forbids harmful AI impersonations of public figures or crisis events. Any realistic AI-generated clip that is without a tag can be deleted under its terms of service.

Furthermore, the service will henceforth attach an “AI-made” tag to content produced via its proprietary AI systems, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing content made by AI. This step is aimed to stop users from seeking to circumvent the disclosure requirement.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is additionally establishing a two million dollar educational fund for specialists and groups to create informative material about responsible artificial intelligence. This project will benefit charitable organizations specializing in educating coding and technology.

Moderation Strategy

The platform has supported its content review process, amid debate over intentions to make redundant numerous safety staff in the UK. The company is planning to cut a significant number of roles in its trust and safety department in London, with worker representatives and internet security professionals raising concerns that staff are being displaced by AI moderation.

A trust and safety lead explained that human moderation would still have a role, but automated tools can shield workers by removing the most graphic content prior to it is viewed by people. TikTok stated a significant reduction in disturbing and violent content handled by content reviewers over the last 12 months due to the use of its automated systems.

We believe it is crucial to balance humans and technology to maintain a secure environment,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to limit contact with dangerous material as swiftly, which is where a lot of the machine support is proving valuable process content quickly.”
