The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
