England and Welsh Drawn Together for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby icons including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same pool for the 2027 RWC, setting up a major pool stage encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw echoes their famous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Key Group Draws

Ireland and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a group once again, replicating the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, Ireland secured a 36-14 victory, with their opponents unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, who each made a strong impression as surprise packages in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and world number one South Africa until the final, assuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Tournament Ramifications

If the groups conclude according to the current global standings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from the likes of the English and the Irish until the final.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on that half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Tournament hosts the Wallabies find themselves alongside their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Group A.

The Wallabies will open the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to launch the event.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Argentina will take on Fiji, Spain and Canada as the tournament grows to twenty-four nations from the twenty who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 stage for the very first time in the competition's existence.

Although the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will meet the second-placed team from Pool B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the pool stages.
